Eurydice
Eurydice was produced at Hope College in the fall of 2021. I was the student costume designer. I worked with a production team that consisted of Hope College faulty and was mentored by Hope's costume designer, Michelle Bombe.
Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice is a modern day interpretation of the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus. In this interpretation of the myth, Eurydice is the main character who journeys through worlds and time. To highlight the transformations, Eurydice’s costumes show a journey through different time periods from the 1950s to the 1990s.
Eurydice travels to the underworld where she meets stones, the lord of the underworld, and her father. The stones’ costumes blend both fantasy and reality. The lord of the underworld undergoes changes and presents as various personas; through a singular color scheme and similar patterns his costumes show all of his characters are the same person. Eurydice’s father is warm and caring, but he has been in the underworld for a very long time so his costume is portrayed as aged and worn.
While Eurydice is in the underworld, Orpheus is grieving the loss of his wife in the land of the living. His continued grief is displayed through him living in his wedding clothes and slowly removing elements of his attire until he is only in an undershirt and pants.
